Tell us about your family.

Kathi Hart and I were married in 1985 and raised four terrific kids in Denver. We were swim parents for 18 years. Patrick (28) works in real estate in Denver, Emily (30) is a teacher and artist and currently lives nearby with her husband Josh and our grandchild (Evie). Billy (33) is an organic chemist at the USDA Lab in Albany, and teaches a bit at Berkeley . He lives in Richmond with his partner Julia and two dogs. Geoffrey (35) is a pediatrician at Stanford and also develops adolescent public health programs. Geoff and Mike live in San Mateo with their dog, Balloo, and were married last month. Kathi taught ESL to adults, completing her career at the University of Denver. Our kids are all very good friends and we enjoy getting together.

What is your most vivid memory from high school?

The senior year overnight party which took place in the SHS quad. I won't say any more. I also remember Lorin Bergman kissing my mom after she handed him his graduation diploma.

Who was your favorite teacher/class?

Fred Cook was a dedicated math teacher who inspired me even though I did not like math. I loved art classes with Bob Lozano and Douglas Campbell Smith because they gave me freedom. I am grateful to my Spanish teachers (Miss Brecunier and Jay....?) for setting a foundation in Spanish that enabled me later on to work professionally in Panama, Venezuela and Chile.

If retired, what keeps you occupied/productive?

For the past two years we have been building a house in Aptos. I continue some consulting work in Colorado, and I help out the family business (Garrod Farms/Cooper Garrod Vineyards.) Kathi and I spend a lot of time exercising our dogs. Kathi loves to meditate, read and write (has rubbed off on me).

What has been the most satisfying thing in your life so far?

Marrying Kathi and raising our four kids. We have experienced much together and have grown to be a close-knit, mutually supportive family. I am very grateful how our lives have worked out.
